Episode Notes

Tracing memories surrounding ordinary life at the inner German border, this episode of In-Between takes you to Lübeck, a former borderland separating Eastern and Western Germany. Lasting for almost half a century, the border designated a militarized zone between the GDR and FRG which upon its collapse has been transformed into a Green Belt, a rewildened and conserved natural area covering the previous terrain of the border zone. Yet, almost 40 years since its collapse, memory of the border continues to reverberate in the lives of local residents. By bringing together stories of crossing and separation, childhood memories of the borderland, and reflections on German reunification, this episode investigates how borders continue to shape some of the most fundamental aspects of our life: the freedom to move and the right to love.
